About Mount Elgon Hiking

At 4,000km² Mt. Elgon has the largest volcanic base in the world. Located on the Uganda-Kenya border.

It is also the oldest and largest solitary, volcanic mountain in East Africa. Its vast form, 80km in diameter, rises more than 3,000m above the surrounding plains. The mountain’s cool heights offer respite from the hot plains below, with the higher altitudes providing a refuge for flora and fauna. Its crater, about 5 miles (8 km) in diameter, contains several peaks, of which Wagagai (14,178 feet [4,321 m]) is the highest. Its extrusions cover about 1,250 square miles (3,200 square km) and consist largely of fragmental rocks and only a smattering of lavas. The mountain slope is gentle and the outline unimpressive. On the east and southeast at about 6,200 feet (1,890 m) its relief merges with the Uasin Gishu Plateau, but in the west and northwest spectacular cliffs dominate the 3,600-foot (1,100-metre) plains of eastern Uganda. In the summit zone, moraines provide ample evidence of former glaciation. On the caldera’s uneven floor there are considerable swamps, tapped by the Suam and Turkwel rivers. Other streams furrow the slopes. The moorland zone, containing tree heaths, giant groundsels, and lobelias, extends down to 10,000 feet (3,050 m), where it is succeeded by bamboo forest. Below 8,300 feet (2,550 m) is a temperate deciduous forest.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • If you are craving adventure with culture then this trip is for you.

  • Thereafter you will spend 4 days hiking and experiencing the beautiful Mt Elgon with its views of waterfalls, vegetation, and caves.

On your way to the park from Kampala, stop off at Mbale for a four-hour hike to the Khauka caves. Alternatively you can go to the viewpoint through Nabuyoga loop where you can see Jackson summit and Wagagi peak. Arrive at the park and check in to your choice of accommodation.

After a hearty breakfast drive to Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre for one of the many nature walks. You could combine the 7km bamboo trail to Kapkwai Cave with the 3km ridge trek to the beautiful Chebonet Falls. Or take the full-day hike moving through tropical and bamboo forest to the Tutum Cave. You will see primates, birds and wonderful flora such as the Elgon tik and Elgon olive.

Depending on how energetic you’re feeling, take a long or short community-organized walk to Sipi Falls. For a different view of this magnificent cascade, how about abseiling alongside the 1st waterfall? Keen anglers can try their hand at fishing at the 3rd waterfall.

Discover the local culture! Visit the Sipi Widows Group for a guided walk around the coffee plantation as you learn how to plant coffee, pick, grind, store and clean the beans.

Along the way, you will meet the residents, learn about life of the Sabiny people and participate in traditional weaving. African cooking demonstrations will give you the chance to prepare and taste traditional dishes.

Alternatively, you may hike from Budadiri to the Mudange cliffs, known as the “walls of death”, at the boundary of the national park.
