About Kenya Masai Mara Safari

Situated in the southwest of Kenya, covering an area of 1 510 square km (583 square miles), the Masai Mara National Reserve is a land of breathtaking vistas, abundant wildlife and endless plains.

The Masai Mara National Reserve and its neighbouring conservancies form Kenya’s flagship conservation area and one of the top safari destinations in Africa. Its wide-open plains provide a sanctuary for an abundance of animals like elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, hyena and the Mara’s famous big cats: lion, leopard and cheetah. And from about June to November every year, the Mara is a much-welcomed pit stop for unending masses of wildebeest that follow the rains on their death-defying, 2 900-kilometre (1 800-mile) circular journey. The quintessential Masai Mara safari delivers many attractions, as the reserve is home to an excellent year-round concentration of game, including the more than two million wildebeest, zebras and other antelopes that make up the famous Great Migration. &Beyond owns 2 lodges in the Masai Mara; Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp and Bateleur Camp. The reserve is a photographer’s and naturalist’s paradise, with abundant elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion and cheetah alongside the migratory wildebeest and zebra. Leopards are frequently encountered, endangered black rhino hide in the dense thickets and large rafts of hippo and enormous crocodiles are found in the Mara River. The park is also home to over 450 bird species.

  • The quintessential Masai Mara safari delivers many attractions, as the reserve is home to an excellent year-round concentration of game, including the more than two million wildebeest, zebras and other antelopes that make up the famous Great Migration.

  • Our 6 day Masai Mara safari itinerary is designed to take you on a journey from Nairobi via Hells Gate National Park, through Lake Nakuru National Park and into the Masai Mara.

  • The Maasai Mara, the star attraction of this 6-day safari adventure, does not require an introduction.

Upon your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, you will find your designated tour guide already waiting for you. He will drive you to Weston Hotel where you will spend your first night in Kenya. We have chosen this hotel for its strategic location away from traffic, as well as its ambiance and professional services. Your guide will ensure that you have checked in and familiarize yourself with the hotel amenities, after which he will leave you to relax and prepare for tomorrow.

This is going to be a packed day- well, packed with adventure! We trust that you will be up and early, as our driver will pick you up at 6 am, just after your early breakfast. The first stop for the day is Hells Gate National Park in Naivasha, roughly a 90-minute drive on smooth roads. Going by road is an excellent way to catch a glimpse of Kenya’s rural areas. On arrival at Hells Gate National Park, you will explore and look for the wildlife in style- on foot! Not to worry- there will be an armed ranger with you all the time. Besides, Hells Gate is one of the few parks where walking safaris are allowed. After the exhilarating walk through the park, you will enjoy a sumptuous late lunch at Ranch House Bistro. The Pizza here is out of this world, but we will let you decide. After lunch and a rest at this beautiful place, it will be time to move on to other things. Your next stop will be the Lake Nakuru National Park where you will check-in at the Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge. Perched on top of a hill, this lodge offers fantastic views of the park. Feel free to take a dip in the pool before dinner, and have a good night’s sleep as more exploring awaits you tomorrow.

Your driver will pick you up and early for this part of the trip. In the early hours of the morning, the Lake is a sea of pink, covered by flamingos. Undoubtedly this is one of the most beautiful sights you have ever seen. Be sure to take as many pictures as possible. If you look closely you will discover that there are other species of birds in the lake as well. A sea of flamingos at Lake Nakuru National Park. After enjoying the lake and the birds, you will then move on to the rest of the park. Lake Nakuru has the right balance of wild animals, and you will find the hunters as well as the hunted. The density of white and black rhinos is quite high here, and you will notice armed rangers in the vicinity of the rhinos. This is to protect them from poachers. There are also plenty of lions, buffaloes, zebras, and giraffes. After exploring the park for the better part of the morning, you will head back to the hotel for lunch. You have time for a quick swim or a few drinks, as soon, you will head out to the most significant part of the safari- the Masai Mara. The distance from Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara is about 4 hours, arriving early evening. You will then check-in at Serena Tented Camp for dinner and overnight.

This is probably the day you have been looking forward to since your arrival in Kenya. The Masai Mara will entice you with its sights and sounds. You will hear animals howling, birds chirping and the mighty Mara River flowing across the savannah bringing life to the park. Your day starts with breakfast, after which your driver-guide will pick you up for a full day game drive. Since you will not be returning to the lodge for lunch, your guide will have planned for the hotel to prepare a packaged lunch. The drive will start slowly, giving you time to view animals as they graze quietly. After lunch and some refreshing cold drinks, you will head out again to another part of the park to continue with your exploration, returning to your lodge at dusk. It has been a long, exciting day, and you are probably tired. You will have time before dinner to freshen up, maybe swim a few laps. After dinner, there will be entertainment by Masai dancers. Tomorrow there is even more adventure waiting!

This is the last full day you will have at the Masai Mara and the most exciting yet. The day starts at dawn with a balloon safari. A balloon safari is one of the most exciting ways of doing a Masai Mara safari– from the air. After boarding, the balloon will start going up. The view from here is magnificent, and you will be able to see as far as your eyes can allow. Herds of elephants will look like specks, and the meandering Mara River will be shining from down below. The balloon will follow the whims of the wind, going where the wind says. A balloon flies over the Masai Mara. The balloon safari will take about an hour, and you will know it’s over when your pilot starts descending. As the exhilarating ride comes to an end, a sumptuous champagne breakfast will be served. After breakfast, your driver will pick you up for a game drive en-route to your hotel, arriving a little before lunch. After lunch, you will have your second activity- visiting a Masai cultural village. After an exciting afternoon, you will be driven back to the hotel. You will have some time to relax as you like before dinner. Tomorrow, you drive back to Nairobi.

Today marks the end of your amazing Masai Mara safari itinerary. After breakfast, you will have time to pack up your bags, which your driver will help you load into the vehicle. You will then leave the park, but not before you go on one last game drive. The park is usually busy in the morning hours, and you might catch some last-minute action. You will then drive out of the park and be on your way to Nairobi. After a quick lunch stop en-route, you will be taken straight to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight back to India. We trust that you enjoyed your 6 Day Masai Mara safari itinerary with Masai mara safari.
