About Machame Route

Machame Route is one of the most popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro.

According to statistics from Kilimanjaro National Park approximately 50% of trekkers use the Machame Route to ascend Kilimanjaro. The route is very scenic, providing hikers with incredible views and varying landscapes. The Machame route is relatively difficult as climbers need to be able to ascend the Barranco Wall on day four and contend with a steep incline up Kibo on summit night. That being said, there are no parts on the route that require any technical climbing skills. The total Machame route distance is approximately 62 kilometres from gate to gate. Weather & Climate :

Machame's climbing starts at the lower regions which are lavish montane rainforests, which are moist and the downpour is dependably a plausibility. As you proceed ahead, tress vanishes and you will be in the heather moorlands which are described by wild grass and bushes. Unpredictable temperatures rule here. Evenings are cold and day searing. Climbing upwards you adventure into desert snow-capped locales where the temperature dives to solidifying depressed spots. At the summit of Uhuru top sit the coating ice sheets that total your equator to the cold adventure.

Success Rate :

Since it has a great success rate and is really attractive, the Machame route is undoubtedly the busiest on the mountain. With 85% success rate, Machame has a relatively high achievement rate because of its great acclimatization alternatives en route as you "move high and rest low".

Direct arrival at a lodge in Moshi at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. This evening you will have a pre-climb briefing with your guide and a consultant.

Depart Moshi to Machame gate, upon arrival at the park gate complete park formalities. Start your trek through lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro while enjoying the diverse flora and fauna of the rain forest.

Your trek today includes climbing up a steep ridge to a small cliff known as picnic site. Proceed with a gentle ascent to Shira Camp with a spectacular view of Kibo peak, Shira plateau and Meru peak if cloudless. You may also visit Shira cave after a short rest at the camp.

Begin your trek out of moorland and enter the semi desert with rocky landscapes following the trail to Eastern side to Lava Tower. At this point you would probably start to feel high altitude sickness symptoms. Descend to Barranco camp for your overnight stay. The camp is located below Barranco wall.

This day is designed for acclimatization. Today you will conquer the Great Barranco Wall with the view of Heim glacier on the top. The trail winds down to Karanga Valley. You will then proceed with a steep climb to Karanga Camp.

Today you cross the alpine desert and continue with your trek on empty and dry landscape to Barafu Camp. This trail intersects with Mweka Route, the trail used to descend for the final two days. The word “Barafu” means Ice, this camp is located on a rocky, exposed ridge.

Around mid-night begins a steep climb over loose volcanic scree. Slow and steady pace will take you towards Stella point. Take a short rest at Stella point (5685m), proceed with your ascent to Uhuru peak (5895m). You will normally encounter snow on your way to the peak. Spend few minutes on the top of the mountain and then descend back to Barafu camp for a short rest before you proceed to Mweka Camp to wind up your day.

Today is the final day on the mountain; enjoy your breakfast before descending to Mweka gate passing through forest zone. Upon arrival at the gate complete park formalities and tipping ceremony with your support team. Our driver will then transfer you to Moshi.

After your trekking end or you can transfer to the airport to back home.
