Witness Africa’s Baby Elephants
Experience Nairobi’s tender giants and discover true elephant magic at the famous Elephant Orphanage.
Elephant Orphanage
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a small, flexible charity, established in 1977 to honour to memory of a famous Naturalist, David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE, the founder Warden of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya,
where he served from its inception in 1948 until his transfer to Nairobi in 1976 to head the Planning Unit of the newly created Wildlife Conservation & Management Department. David died 6 months later but his legacy of excellence and the systems he installed for the management of Tsavo and wildlife generally in Kenya, particularly in the sphere of wildlife husbandry and ethics, lives on.
Elephant Orphanage
Established in 1977, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a non-profit organization situated in Nairobi National Park. The trust was founded after the death of David Sheldrick, the antipoaching warden of Tsavo National Park. David and his wife, Daphne, were pioneers in raising orphaned black rhinos and elephants and reintroducing them into the wild. The trust maintains close links with Tsavo and carries out several conservation projects.
The trust is a popular attraction in Nairobi and offers visitors a unique opportunity to view baby elephants up close. Visitors are escorted to a viewing area where they can witness the handlers bottle-feeding the baby elephants. After the feeding, the elephants proceed to play and frolic in the mud, which makes for some great photo opportunities. During this time, the keepers provide information about the individual orphans and the trust’s conservation projects.
In addition to the baby elephants, the trust is also home to several orphaned rhinos, including Maxwell, a blind rhino who is kept in a large stockade for his protection. Visitors can also ‘adopt’ one of the elephants and visit them when they return to the stockades in the evening. Overall, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a must-visit attraction for animal lovers and conservation enthusiasts visiting Nairobi.
